Craigslist Find: 1990 Trans Am 1LE Sunoco SCCA Race Car

Photos from Craigslist Ad

In 1990, there were 4 1LE cars built by Pontiac, and they were sold to their owners through GM’s supplier/subsidiary system. This 1 of 4, in particular, was sold to its first owner and delivered through a dealer in Flint to a worker at GM Chassis in Flint, MI. When we saw this one turn up on the New Haven, CT Craigslist site for sale, it definitely caught our eye.

Over 2 million Pontiac Firebirds and Chevy Camaros were built between 1982 and 1992, but only 1532 of those ended up being 1LE cars. Chevy made 1,360 of them, leaving only 172 Pontiacs with the trim, and as previously mentioned, only 4 of those were made for the 1990 model year.

This 1990 Trans Am 1LE SCCA race car was built by John Bennett to compete in the SCCA American Sedan class. It is dressed in 91/92 Firebird Formula body panels, and has one of Pontiac’s super rare aluminum hoods to cover the engine bay.

Back in the early 1990s, this car was driven and raced by Jim Christ, the founder of the famous Toy Store Corvette dealer in Largo, FL. Jim raced this 1LE Trans Am with great success including multiple poles, wins, and track records at Road Atlanta, Sebring, Daytona, and Homestead Miami.

As it sits, the 3rd-Gen 1LE Trans Am is restored to its original race appearance under the Sunoco sponsorship, and is legal to race in vintage racing with a full cage, window nets and belts, race spec’ed engine, Super T-10 4-speed transmission, and beefy Ford 9” locker rearend. It’s also running with an Accusump oiling system and a fuel cell.

This 1LE Trans Am has never been titled, but it does have the original VIN plate intact — it also comes with a SCCA log book. If you’re looking for a purpose built vintage (sort of) race car and have the cash to spend, this one is clean and road ready, so check it out!
