VIDEO: 2017 Camaro SS vs 2017 Mustang GT Drag Race

This is the race you’ve been waiting for, the showdown on the drag strip between a 2017 Camaro SS and 2017 Mustang GT. In this challenge, we get to revisit the age ole Camaro versus Mustang, Ford versus Chevy rivalry that we honestly hope never ends. Both cars seem pretty evenly matched, we’re pretty certain they are both automatics so it won’t come down to the driver, but how does it shake out?

The Mustang seems to have some sort of track tire on the rear, as indicated by its mismatched wheels. In the other corner, it would appear that the Camaro has stock tires all around. So, does this tire advantage mean the Mustang is destined to win? Not necessarily! Besides the tires, just how evenly matched are these two modern muscle cars anyways? Let’s talk about it.

The 2017 Chevy Camaro SS gets its 455 horsepower and 455 lbs-ft of torque from a 6.2L LT1 V8. Powering the 2017 Mustang is a 435 horsepower and 400 lbs-ft of torque 5.0L Coyote V8. In addition to having more power and torque, the Camaro is also lighter, so the Mustang is going to need those tires, actually, it’s going to need all the edge it can get. We’ll let the Mustang have its handicap because we were pretty sure this wouldn’t end well for the pony car as soon as we saw the video’s title.

The Mustang GT does a quick burnout, while the Camaro SS does a little hop around the burnout box. Each car stages and the green lights drop, the cars leave the line at the same time, but the Camaro shakes the Mustang pretty early in the race. The Mustang GT gains on him through the top end, resulting in a higher trap speed, but the Camaro definitely finishes first. We’ve seen the 2017 Camaro SS run better, but it still squeaked ahead with a 12.79 E/T to beat the Mustang’s 12.95 E/T.
